It’s that time of year where the temperature begins to dip into the lows and the holiday spirit is around the corner. A perfect way to get you into the Spirit is to make your way to the beautiful city of Bruges, Belgium. Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located in the northwest of the country. Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of the North". The perfect time to visit will be between the end of November through early January, the streets will be filled with holiday spirit and plenty of festivals to attend!
One of the most exciting festivals to attend is the Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival in Bruges, Belgium. The traditional Ice sculpture festival will be held from the 23rd of November 2012 to the 6th of January 2013. Three hundred thousand kilos of ice and 400 tons of snow are shipped in and professional ice sculptors work hard to carve the most beautiful glacial creations.
Be prepared to walk into a whimsical ice world this year because Bruges is proud to announce a world first: its own unique interpretation of Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit! The Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival will take you to a cool and fantasy world full of emotions and adventures. The ice palace is kept at a constant minus 6 degrees centigrade so make sure you bundle up for this unique festival!
During the same time Bruges will also be having it Christmas Market which is from November 25th 2012- the 3rd of January 2013. There can't be many settings more beautiful at Christmas than this medieval town, with its cobbled streets, historic buildings and horses and carts plodding by.
